Generally in GD (and previously in TQ) during the early game you will want to 1) max out your mastery bars as much as possible while 2) choosing a pallet of skills that generally synergize well with each other via damage types/resists and (this is fairly important) 3) get only the first level in each skill until you've maxed out the mastery bars and also 4) use gear with high/multiple resists.
